1. About these Terms
The Student Discount Membership is supplied by Island Ryde Limited, trading as Ryde (“Ryde”, “we”, “us” or “our”), company registration number 147521.
- Registered office: First Floor, Tower House, La Route es Nouaux, St Helier, Jersey JE2 4ZJ.
- Trading address: Unit 4, Cargo Centre, L’Avenue de la Commune, St Peter, Jersey JE3 7ZR.
- Contact: student@ryde.je or +44 (0)1534 666333.
These Terms govern eligibility, subscription payment, activation and use of the Student Discount. Ryde’s Main Terms of Service at ryde.je/terms-of-service govern every Booking and journey. If there is a conflict, these Terms take priority only for the Membership and Student Discount. The Main Terms take priority for transport, conduct, safety, fares and journeys.
The Subscriber accepts these Terms and the Main Terms when purchasing the Membership. The current versions are available on Ryde’s website and, where appropriate, in the Ryde app.
2. Definitions
“Booking” means a request for a journey made through an approved Ryde booking channel.
“Eligible Fare” means the part of the final fare for an eligible app Booking to which the Student Discount applies under clause 8.
“Main Terms” means Ryde’s Main Terms of Service available at ryde.je/terms-of-service.
“Member” means the named individual entitled to receive and use the Student Discount.
“Membership” means the paid Ryde Student Discount Membership governed by these Terms.
“Parent Subscriber” means a Subscriber aged 18 or over who is the parent, legal guardian or another person with parental responsibility for a Young Member.
“Student Discount” means the discount made available under the Membership, subject to these Terms.
“Subscriber” means the adult who contracts with Ryde and is responsible for purchasing, paying for and administering the Membership.
“Young Member” means a named Member aged 16 or 17.
3. Eligibility
The Membership is available for a named Member who is at least 16 years old and under 21 years old when the Membership begins and on each renewal date.
“Student Discount” is the commercial name of the product. The Member does not currently have to attend a school, college, university or other educational institution.
A Member aged 18 to 20 must subscribe through their own active Ryde passenger app account. The email address and mobile number supplied for the Membership must exactly match that account.
A Membership for a Young Member must be purchased and controlled by a Parent Subscriber through the Parent Subscriber’s active Ryde passenger app account under clause 4.
The Subscriber must provide complete, accurate and truthful information. Each Membership covers one named Member. Unless Ryde expressly agrees otherwise, a Subscriber may hold only one active Membership and only one Membership may be linked to a Ryde account at a time.
4. Memberships for 16 and 17-year-olds
A Young Member cannot enter into the subscription contract, register their own Ryde account or act as the Booker. The Parent Subscriber is the contracting and paying party and must make discounted Bookings through their own Ryde account.
By purchasing a Membership for a Young Member, the Parent Subscriber confirms that they:
- are aged 18 or over;
- are the Young Member’s parent, legal guardian or another person with parental responsibility;
- are authorised to provide the Young Member’s information and manage the Membership for them;
- will provide accurate Passenger, collection and contact information for each Booking;
- will remain reasonably contactable during a journey where required; and
- will comply with Ryde’s safeguarding and unaccompanied-minor arrangements.
The Parent Subscriber does not have to travel, but the named Young Member must travel on every journey for which the Student Discount is used. Friends or family may travel with the Young Member.
The Parent Subscriber remains responsible for the subscription, recurring payments, cancellation, account activity and applicable journey charges. The Parent Subscriber should bring these Terms and Ryde’s Privacy Notice, or an appropriate age-accessible explanation of them, to the Young Member’s attention.
5. Subscription options and recurring payment
The available recurring subscription options are:
- Monthly Membership: £9.99 plus GST, charged each month.
- Annual Saver Membership: £99.99 plus GST, charged each year.
The selected price and billing frequency will be shown before payment. Payments are processed by Stripe. Ryde does not receive or store full payment-card details.
The first payment is taken when the Subscriber purchases the Membership. The subscription then renews automatically at the selected interval using the saved payment method until it is cancelled or otherwise ends under these Terms.
The paid Membership period begins on the payment date, including where activation is completed later within the 48-hour processing period described below.
6. Activation and the 48-hour processing period
Activation is not automatic. After successful payment, Ryde must manually reconcile the subscription and link the email address and mobile number supplied during registration to the Student Discount in its booking system.
Activation may take up to 48 hours from the later of successful payment and Ryde receiving complete, accurate information which matches the relevant Ryde account.
The Subscriber should not make a Booking expecting the Student Discount to apply until activation has been confirmed and the STUDENT code is accepted and displayed in the app. A Booking or journey made before activation is not eligible for a retrospective discount, refund or fare adjustment solely because activation was still being processed within the stated 48 hours.
If supplied information does not match the Ryde account, Ryde may request corrected information and activation may take longer. A delay caused by incomplete, inaccurate or mismatched information does not extend the paid Membership period or create a right to a refund. If activation is delayed beyond 48 hours because of Ryde’s error, contact student@ryde.je so that Ryde can investigate and provide an appropriate remedy where required.
7. How to receive the Student Discount
Once activated, the Membership provides a 30% Student Discount on Eligible Fares during the paid Membership period.
For the Student Discount to apply:
- the Booking must be made through the eligible Ryde passenger app account;
- the STUDENT promotional code must be entered or selected and the discount must be shown before the Booking is confirmed;
- the Membership must be active both when the Booking is made and when the journey takes place; and
- the named Member must travel as a Passenger on the journey.
The Student Discount cannot be applied retrospectively or outside of the app. If the app does not display the discount before confirmation, the Subscriber should not proceed on the assumption that Ryde or the Driver can refund the difference afterwards. Contact student@ryde.je if there appears to be an activation or account problem.
The STUDENT code may be publicly visible, but knowing or possessing the code does not create an entitlement. It works only where eligible account details have been activated and the other conditions in these Terms are met.
8. Eligible Fares and excluded charges
Eligible Fare means the final journey fare charged for an eligible app Booking, including metered waiting time forming part of that journey fare, but excluding:
- Extra Capability Charges, including charges for Premium, XXL or seven-seat, wheelchair-accessible, baby-seat or pet-transport capability;
- cancellation and no-show fees;
- cleaning, soiling, damage or repair charges;
- tips or gratuities; and
- parking costs and other third-party or pass-through charges.
Ryde’s current system may temporarily apply discount reduction to some Extra Capability Charges. Any such reduction is an additional discretionary benefit, is not part of the contractual Student Discount, may be removed at any time and does not create an entitlement for future Bookings.
Fare estimates, fixed fares, metered fares and permitted fare adjustments remain subject to the Main Terms. The Student Discount applies to the final Eligible Fare after any permitted adjustment.
9. Ryde tariffs and pricing changes
The Membership does not fix or guarantee Ryde’s underlying fares, tariffs or journey-related charges. Ryde may introduce, increase, reduce or otherwise change base fares, mileage rates, waiting-time rates, Extra Capability Charges, cancellation or no-show fees, cleaning or damage charges and other journey-related charges from time to time, subject to applicable law and regulatory requirements.
The Student Discount is calculated against the Eligible Fare using the tariffs, rates and charges applicable to the Booking. Purchasing a monthly or annual Membership does not lock in the underlying tariff or guarantee any particular level of saving.
10. Other promotions and rates
The Student Discount cannot be combined with another promotion, voucher, membership discount, corporate rate or promotional code unless Ryde expressly states otherwise. Ryde may apply the single valid discount or rate selected for the Booking.
11. Personal use, fair use and misuse
There is no fixed individual journey limit. Frequent genuine personal use is not, by itself, misuse. The Membership is nevertheless personal to the named Member and is not transferable.
Misuse includes:
- sharing an account or allowing another person to use the Membership;
- booking a discounted journey when the named Member will not travel;
- providing false identity, date-of-birth, parental-responsibility or eligibility information;
- creating duplicate Memberships or accounts to avoid restrictions;
- reselling, transferring or commercially exploiting discounted Bookings; or
- fraudulent, abusive or deliberately manipulated use of the Membership or booking system.
Ryde may confirm with its drivers, monitor relevant account, subscription, Booking and journey information to administer the Membership and identify suspected misuse. Where misuse is reasonably suspected, Ryde may pause the Student Discount while it investigates and may request information from the Subscriber. Ryde will consider the circumstances and carry out an appropriate human review before making a final adverse decision.
If deliberate or material misuse is established, Ryde may suspend or terminate the Membership and associated promotional access. No refund will be due for termination following established fraud or deliberate material misuse, except where required by law.
12. Identity, age and parental verification
Ryde may request reasonable evidence of the Subscriber’s identity, the Member’s identity and age and, for a Young Member, the Parent Subscriber’s relationship or parental responsibility. Verification may be requested at registration, renewal or any time while the Membership is active.
Ryde may appoint a third-party identity or age-verification provider. Before any such process begins, affected people will receive appropriate information about the provider, the information required, how it will be used and whether identity-document or biometric processing is involved.
Ryde may pause the Student Discount while verification is outstanding. If the requested information is not provided within the reasonable period stated by Ryde, or verification shows that the eligibility requirements were not met, Ryde may terminate the Membership. A delay caused by a failure to provide accurate information or complete a reasonable verification request does not extend the paid period or create a right to a refund, except where required by law.
13. Failed payments
By subscribing, the Subscriber authorises Stripe and Ryde to charge the displayed recurring fee to the selected payment method at each renewal until the subscription is cancelled.
If a payment fails, Stripe may retry it. Ryde may pause the Student Discount while payment remains outstanding and may cancel the Membership if payment is not successfully collected. The Membership will not remain active for a new period for which the applicable subscription fee has not been paid.
14. Cancelling the subscription
The Subscriber may cancel at any time through the Stripe customer portal made available to them or by emailing student@ryde.je. Only the Parent Subscriber may cancel a Membership purchased for a Young Member.
Cancellation stops future renewal payments. Unless a statutory cancellation right applies, the Membership remains active until the end of the period already paid for and no full or partial refund is provided merely because the Subscriber no longer wishes to use it.
An email cancellation request takes effect when Ryde receives it. To avoid an unwanted renewal, the request should be submitted before the renewal payment is due. If Ryde receives the request before renewal but nevertheless takes the renewal payment because of its processing delay, Ryde will correct the payment.
Statutory cancellation rights and early performance
Under the Distance Selling (Jersey) Law 2007, a Subscriber will generally have a statutory right to cancel an online service contract during the period of seven working days beginning with the day after the contract is concluded, subject to the information requirements and exceptions in that Law.
Because the Membership is intended for prompt activation, checkout will ask the Subscriber to expressly request that Ryde begins performing the service before that cancellation period ends. This includes reconciling payment and linking the relevant Ryde account to the Student Discount. Where performance begins with the Subscriber’s agreement after the required information has been provided, the statutory right to cancel may no longer apply.
A statutory cancellation notice must be given in writing or another durable medium and may be sent to student@ryde.je or Ryde’s registered office. If the Subscriber validly cancels before performance has begun, Ryde will reimburse sums which must be repaid under applicable law. Ryde does not provide an additional voluntary cooling-off refund once performance has begun. Nothing in these Terms limits a consumer right which cannot lawfully be excluded.
15. Age changes
If a Young Member turns 18 during a paid Membership period, the Membership may continue until that paid period ends. Before the next renewal, Ryde may require the Membership to be transferred or linked to the Member’s own eligible Ryde account. Until that transfer is completed, the Parent Subscriber remains responsible for the Membership and Bookings made through their account.
If a Member turns 21 during a paid Membership period, the Membership may continue until that paid period ends but will not renew after it expires. Turning 18 or 21 does not, by itself, create a right to a partial refund.
16. Changes to the Membership and these Terms
The subscription price and core 30% Student Discount will not change during a paid Membership period. Ryde may change the price, discount percentage, eligibility rules or introduce a reasonable usage limit from a future renewal date by giving at least 30 days’ notice through email, the app or another appropriate channel. The Subscriber may cancel before the change takes effect.
Ryde may make non-material administrative changes, changes required by law or regulation, or changes which benefit Members without waiting until renewal. The current Terms and version date will be published on Ryde’s website and, where appropriate, in the app. Subscribers should review the current version periodically.
A change to Ryde’s underlying tariffs or journey-related charges under clause 9 is not a change to the contractual 30% Student Discount. Removing a temporary reduction applied by the system to Extra Capability Charges is also not a change to the contractual Student Discount.
17. Availability and service limitations
Membership does not guarantee that a Booking will be accepted or fulfilled, that a vehicle or particular vehicle type will be available, that the app or promotional code will be continuously available, or that the Member will achieve any minimum saving. Booking confirmation, availability, delays, disruptions, cancellations and journey performance are governed by the Main Terms.
Ryde will use reasonable efforts to maintain the Membership and discount systems but may suspend access temporarily for maintenance, technical failure, security, suspected misuse, payment issues, legal or regulatory requirements or another reasonable operational reason.
18. Ending or withdrawing the Membership
The Membership ends when the paid period expires after cancellation, when the Member is no longer eligible at renewal, when a renewal payment is not successfully collected, or when Ryde terminates it under these Terms.
Ryde may withdraw the Student Discount Membership as a product. If it does so during a paid period for reasons unrelated to the Subscriber’s or Member’s breach or misuse, Ryde will either continue the benefit until the paid period ends or provide an appropriate refund for the unused part of that period.
19. Personal information and communications
Ryde processes personal information needed to assess eligibility, administer and activate the Membership, manage recurring payments, communicate with the Subscriber and Member, prevent misuse and comply with legal obligations. This may include names, dates of birth, contact and account details, relationship or parental-responsibility information, subscription and payment status, verification information and relevant Booking or journey information.
Ryde may use a future verification provider as described in clause 12. Personal information will be handled under Ryde’s Privacy Notice at ryde.je/privacy-policy and applicable Jersey data-protection law. Children and young people retain their own data-protection rights.
Ryde may send operational communications about activation, payment, renewal, cancellation, verification, safety and the Membership by email, SMS, push notification, app or another appropriate channel. These are service communications and are separate from marketing. The Subscriber must keep their contact and account details accurate and current.
20. Liability and statutory rights
Ryde’s liability in connection with individual Bookings and journeys is governed by the Main Terms. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ryde is not responsible for an expected saving, Booking or journey which is unavailable because the Membership has not yet been activated, the code was not successfully applied before confirmation, payment failed, eligibility could not be verified, information was inaccurate, or the Membership was used contrary to these Terms.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability or consumer right which cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
21. Questions and complaints
Questions or complaints about the Membership should first be sent to student@ryde.je or raised by calling +44 (0)1534 666333. Ryde will aim to investigate and respond fairly and promptly.
Nothing in these Terms restricts a statutory right to complain to a regulator, authority, tribunal or other competent body.
22. General and Jersey law
The Membership is personal and may not be sold, transferred or assigned by the Subscriber or Member. A failure or delay by Ryde in enforcing a term is not a waiver. If any provision is invalid or unenforceable, it will be modified or severed to the minimum extent required and the remaining provisions will continue.
These Terms and any related non-contractual obligations are governed by Jersey law. The Jersey courts and tribunals have jurisdiction, subject to any consumer right which requires a different forum.
